Taking a break from hating on Ian Svenonius and his self indulgent displays at thee Parkside to bring you news about the world of film. Seriously, this guy has been regurgitating the same boring bullshit in full on self masturbatory displays for eons. Someone please stop him! I swear he dared to utter lyrics about “the man”, “who shot JFK” and other nonsense fit for 1967.
As a part of my promise to be less of a hater and more zen, I will say that I do sometimes enjoy watching his Soft Focus interviews on VBS.
Two unrelated films in different genres for your pleasure; Streetwise and The Room.
I’ve been obsessed with the documentary Streetwise for some time now. I recently got the urge to watch it again, but the only copy I have is on VHS (to my knowledge it hasn’t been released on DVD) and I junked my vcr recently to make room for my cable box. Stupid, yes.
Anyway, I found the entire movie on YouTube and must recommend it to anyone. It’s an engaging, brutally honest portrayal of the lives of kids hustling on the streets of Seattle in the early 1980s. The film follows the lives of the teenagers’ with much of the film focused on the child prostitute “Tiny”.
The film’s Director, Martin Bell and his wife, photgrapher Mary Ellen Mark have kept up with Tiny nee Erin Blackwell, many times since the film’s release. In 2006, an article in the Seattle Weekly caught up with Blackwell, now Erin Charles, her husband and 6 of her 9 children.
If you’re further intrigued you can check out this wikipedia entry to find out what happened to the cast.
Also, for more on Mary Ellen Mark, a photographer deserving of the highest accolades, visit her site
After a few rounds of drinks at Port Costa I found out about a strange movie made in San Francisco called The Room. Apparently,Tommy Wiseau, the star, producer, director of the film pissed away 6 million dollars on a film which, in its intention was a serious drama, but became a cult classic for being uber terrible . I have yet to see the film, I’ve just seen clips so far,but my friend is screening the film at her place next weekend so, I’m trying to hold off until then.
Here’s what seems to be an accurate description of the film:
“Imagine you’ve poured your heart and soul (and, incidentally, six million dollars) into making a serious drama that speaks to people and truly says something universal about our human experience here on this planet. You’ve even taken out a full-page ad in Variety to offer up your movie for Academy Award consideration, and you’ve rented out a billboard in LA with your frightening face on it just for added emphasis. Now imagine that all the early screenings feature people walking out early in what appears to be disgust or just laughing their fool heads off through the entire runtime. Then just imagine you’re soulless and broken and pathetic enough to pretend that you intended it as a comedy all along, and isn’t your movie hilariously funny ha ha ha?
Here’s a clip of the trailer for your viewing pleasure

Breaking news, one of my favorite childhood television shows is selling merch on their site.
Buster and me, I’ll spare you the details and give you the overview. Essentially it was the story of two chimpanzees Buster and Vanilla, who were being raised by a woman named Robin. I was obsessed with this show and am now debating buying this shirt
In other exciting news(har har), please check out some new tunes on the heels of the recent Vaselines show, which I unfortunately did not attend. I heard it was great and have been going on a serious Vaselines bender for the last couple weeks.
I have a gnarly sinus infection acquired on a trip to NYC. The left side of my face hurts and I can feel it from my forehead to my teeth. It rules.
I have managed to go out a couple times this week. On Thursday I went to see The Anasazis,Wounded Lion, and the Fresh and Onlys at the Knockout.I had one of those rare nights where I was really stoked to be out and see friends/acquaintances. The show was packed and it was nice to see soo many people enjoying themselves on a Thursday night. I missed the first band, The Anasazis(hope that’s right!) Wounded Lion were pretty killer and oddly enough they had mostly Lamps merch to sell.
Without prompting my friend bought me a Lamps shirt in a men’s medium. It made sense at the time, but now as I try it on it resembles a tall tee.
Also, on Saturday I went to the KUSF party at Peacock Lounge with Ty Segall,Kelley Stoltz,I Love My Label. Kinda weird heavy vibe in the air. Didn’t really seem like people were enjoying themselves that much. I usually like the kookiness that is Peacock; a Masonic lounge owned and operated by some older black folks who insist that all shows are done by 1am. I meandered around, ended up missing Ty Segall and caught the last half of Kelley Stoltz. He sounded just as good live as his recordings. He’s got kind of a velvety voice that I dig as a Sunday afternoon cleaning the house jam. No disrespect of course.
After that I went to Night Beat at Edinburgh and talked to a Frenchie named of course, Pierre, who was leaving town the next day, or so he said. He actually acted bummed that I didn’t invite him to my house. I shook his hand and said goodbye like the gentlewoman that I am.
Here’s some tunes for you to peruse.

even though I haven’t updated this shit in a million years
blah, blah, blah. In lieu of anything interesting, I will tell you that the Hospitals,Eat Skull show at LiPo was pretty cool.
Subtracting ten points for searching my bag and confiscating my booze, serving the teeniest well drinks and charging $6 and not being able to walk all the way in since the front was soooo crowded.
oh, also the douches on the couch who were upset that I was taking over they’re spot. Hey guys, its a show not a reservation at a fine dining restaurant.
Here’s some shit I’m looking forward to in the next week:
I thought for about one minute that Mr. Pettibon may have been quirky, eccentric and interesting based on his unusual oratory skills. I was however, so fucking wrong.
Children, this is what happens when you’ve taken one to many bong rips to the dome. I could barely resist the urge to go up and pound on his back while yelling “just get it out”. His speech was punctuated with so many non sequiturs and the increasingly frustrating inability to answer a question.
Here’s some highlights….
When discussing his baseball related work he instead opted to speak for 20 minutes about some obscure play in a game AT LENGTH, as if it had just occurred or was somehow relevant to his process. Hi, we’re at an art school and no one needs a play-by-play of a game that happened 40 years ago.
He chastized the audience for being at his talk rather than being “in Oakland”. Uhhh, excuse me? I would really like to make my own decisions about whether the whole Oscar Grant/Bart shooting incident and did he have any idea that there was a whole lot of reckless violence that coincided with protests.
Anyway, I could go on for ever about how much Raymond Pettibon killed my boner for him. I’m not saying I fancied him, but I would’ve preferred to keep him on a pedestal with all my heroes of yore.
Instead, he gets onstage in a sloppy dress shirt buttoned wrong and spills beer on himself every time he swigs and plays in a sucky band where he reads lyric sheets and stomps off angrily in the middle of his set after fighting with his bandmates.
give a talk about art and related concepts such as baseball a little later today.
If you live in San Francisco you should march your ass over to the Potrero Hill Campus of CCA in the Neve at 1111 Eighth Street. It’s accesible via the #19 Polk, the #15 and the #22 Fillmore. GOOGLE THAT SHIT.
Starts@7 but is likely to be at capacity (150) quickly
